Insulation hanging from the crawl space Mold in Jackson, Wy from a hot water line

Today we are just outside of Jackson working in the crawl space of this beautiful home. There was a pin hole in a hot water line which leaked for an unknown amount of time. We will be pulling all the insulation out mitigating the mold and drying the affected materials.

www.cdc.gov states that Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. These people should stay away from areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas.

Mold in the drywall

7/10/2019 (Permalink)

Eric and Justin went to Alpine over the weekend to look at the crawl space in a home that’s still under construction. Because the floor joists were not sealed correctly when they were installed by a different company, mold had begun to grow and water was beginning to seep in through the foundation.

Mold can be very dangerous and go almost unnoticed in some instances. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.

If you suspect you may have mold growth in your home or business please give SERVPRO a call today at (208) 523-5365. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all of your fire, water, mold and asbestos needs.

mold growth!

Jared and Mike were at a new water loss job this morning. The water came from an overflowing toilet!

Water is bad enough on its own but when left unattended it can cause the dreaded… MOLD! www.moldepedia.com states that moisture is really the key cause of mold growth since the other conditions on the list are always going to be present in homes. So, essentially, the difference between whether mold grows in your home or not comes down to whether you have a moisture problem.

What Mold Needs to Grow

Mold needs these conditions before it can begin to grow in a home:

  • Mold spores
  • A food source (eg wood, drywall, cotton)
  • Darkness (mold can't grow under ultraviolet light)
  • Warmth (mold can't grow in freezing temperatures)
  • Oxygen
  • Moisture (eg water leaks, humidity)
  • Enough time (most molds can begin to grow in 24-48 hours if the conditions are right)

Facts about mold

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

Hearing the word mold can make anyone cringe. It is a word that everyone seems to know but most know little about. After reviewing www.epa.gov website, they share 10 things that everyone should know about mold.

  1. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.
  2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Hepa Filter

10/29/2018 (Permalink)

When dealing with mold it is always important to remove as much signs as possible to prevent contamination or sickness. There are many ways that we do this and many machines and products that we use. One machine in particular is called a HEPA Filter.

What Do HEPA Filtration Devices Do?

HFDs help control airborne contaminants during every restoration job, and are absolutely essential for water loss jobs, particularly those involving black water or structural mold contamination. Their most critical task is capturing microscopic bacteria and mold spores released into the air during the drying process, but can also capture larger particles like drywall dust stirred up during demolition and construction activities and, when equipped with carbon filters, odors off-gassed from microbes, paints and other chemicals.

If you suspect mold in your home or business give SERVPRO a call today. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! (208) 523-5365

Black Mold

9/30/2018 (Permalink)

Potentially dangerous, black mold can make anyone become weary. Being able to identify black mold is the first step in being able to control the growth and hopefully rid your home of black mold.

Black mold is more likely to show up in warm, humid, and damp areas of your home. Under sinks, in basements, and also crawlspace are all susceptible for a black mold outbreak. Especially if they leaks or other moisture.

Black mold is dangerous and can cause an array of allergies and health concerns so make sure you look on the EPA website for more information.

Removing black mold is a step-by-step process that usually requires professional assistance. Some of these steps include...

1. You must remove the source of any moisture from the affected surface.

2.  Seal any doorways and other openings leading to other areas of the home that were not infected.

3.  Use commercial black mold removal.

Make sure to give SERVPRO a call today if you suspect black mold or any other mold in your home.

There is mold in the walls

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can be extremely hazardous if not taken care of and dealt with right away and in the correct manner. It is always a good idea to call a professional so they can asses the problem. We here at SERVPRO offer free mold testing to residential and commercial properties.

Because drywall is a substance high in cellulose (an organic substance), It is one of the most common materials mold grows on in your home. As there is no practical way to completely remove mold from drywall, you will have to cut out and dispose of any drywall you discover which has mold growing on it.

Mold is an incredible hider and usually grows behind the walls and out of sight. The mold likes these spaces because they hold large amounts of humid moist air. To find this hidden mold you will need to have a professional preform an invasive inspection.

The most common reasons for mold growth is humidity, water leaks, and condensation. Condensation is the change of water from water vapors into liquid water. Condensation generally occurs in the atmosphere when warm air rises, cools, and loses its capacity to hold vapor. As a result, excess water vapor condenses to form cloud droplets.

If you suspect you may have a fire, water, mold or asbestos problem call the professionals at SERVPRO today so we can take care of you. We are available 24 hours a day and always available for our customers.

Mold Testing

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

The threat from mold growth is multiple. There is the visual infestation that covers ceilings, walls, and other structural property. If the visible signs go unchecked, the mold grows into drywall, wood beams and other parts of the home. In addition to physical damage, there are the health effects that mold can have on some people. Each of these threats requires remediation to remove them; this may involve cleaning only, but cases that went unnoticed for an extended period require removal and replacement of damaged property.

Testing for mold at the first suspicion is the best way to go. SERVPRO performs a mold testing check for our Idaho Falls neighbors. Our office is licensed to perform mold inspections and has developed a protocol that includes the following:

We perform a visual inspection that includes photo documentation of all mold growth. If the visual inspection uncovers mold growth, no further testing is needed. If the fungi are present, they need removal and remediation. Air and surface samples from every room in the house or apartment along with a laboratory report to explain the findings, only if needed. After completion, one of our inspectors sits down with each customer to explain not just the results, but every step we took during the inspection.

Also, we provide an estimate of what steps we take to treat and remove the mold along with how much each task costs. If we do not find mold, our inspector gives the homeowner a report that states the house or apartment was tested and found to have no excess mold that poses a threat.

We have some of the best training and the latest equipment in the restoration industry, but it is our reputation that matters the most. If we uncover mold, and before we start the remediation process, we recommend that you hire a third party to perform the same tests. The second round of testing provides you with peace of mind by removing any potential conflict of interest.

If you need any help please give SERVPRO a call so we can return your home to its pre-infested state. We are here to help.

Here a mold, there a mold, everywhere a mold mold!

These duplexes were poorly built which unfortunately created an oasis for mold, LOTS and lots of mold. There was also damage to a large portion of the exterior as well as some interiors on every building within this subdivision. In this instance we came in after the initial tear out. We hepa vacuumed, disinfectant sprayed, and painted to seal. This was a very time consuming project and on top of that we had to deal with the weather elements to make sure everything dried properly. There were a lot of extra expenses on this job that could have been avoided if it was just done correctly the first time.

Dealing with mold in SE Idaho

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold should always be considered as a matter left to the professionals. These fungi develop into large colonies from mold spores which are in nature all around you. Spores are in virtually every household, lying dormant, waiting for the right conditions to start a bloom. Mold removal and remediation from your SE Idaho home should be looked into quickly when discovered.

This mold can take over large areas if allowed to remain after it has been detected. Contrary to popular lure, mold species, there being thousands, are not often harmful to humans or animals. They can cause negative health effects, but usually in the old, the very young, and individuals with immune system disorders. Some people are sensitive to the allergens and mycotoxins which can be produced by mold colonies.

Mold requires three factors to flourish into colonies: a food source which may be cellulose products like wood, and most other organic laced products around the home. Also, a fair amount of moisture, and shaded cool areas away from direct sunlight. This means that the only indicator you may have is a musty odor coming from a closet or the basement if not a crawlspace. One of the reasons you may be getting molds, now, after all of this time, is that you may have had a leaking faucet or pipe, somewhere in your house. That leaking pipe, appliance or water heater could be the cause for activating any mold spores you do have, and this is the time that growth gets started.  A call to SERVPRO of Idaho Falls/Rexburg is a wise decision to make. An infestation takes 48-72 hours to start to gain steam. It can then grow at a good rate, especially in dark, undetected voids within your SE Idaho home.

The entire home should be inspected to locate, not only molds but spaces that are the perfect environment for their growth. This means those closed areas, under sinks, and behind walls and above ceilings. The professionals from SERVPRO have the equipment such as infrared cameras to distinguish heat variations inside walls which help determine the possibility of a mold infestation.

Several actions that you should not take before a professional gets there:
Do not allow elderly folks or kids into visible infestation points
Do not expose the mold to a fan as this can spread it around the house.
Do not disturb or touch the mold in any way.
Do not use bleach on it.
Do not try to dry it out yourself as the spores can become airborne and contaminate more areas of your home. If your HVAC system is on, turn it off immediately to prevent circulation through the duct work.

During a complete inspection, the mold remediation and restoration experts from SERVPRO can locate, contain and remediate the molds. The source of the moisture must be identified and fixed or else the mold growth can return. The techs will use foggers to broadcast antifungal, antimicrobial, and deodorizing products in the required sequence. Air scrubbers can also be employed to purge the air of many mold spores. HEPA filtration systems, protective clothing, and gear, along with specialized equipment and chemical products can remediate the mold infestation in your Ririe home and restore your space to a safe condition "Like it never even happened."

Theres Mold Under Here

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

This SERVPRO loss was reported in a home that is under construction and did not have any house wrap on it. This lack of preparation naturally exposed all of the framing and plywood to the outside elements.

The area had received a large amount of rain during the building process and as such, the main floor had soaked up a significant amount of water.

As winter approached and temperatures became cooler the floor was unable to dry out. The combination of the wet flooring along with the crawlspace not having the proper ventilation needed encouraged mold to start to grow on the bottom of the sheeting.

The SERVPRO inspection showed that the whole main level had mold on the bottom side of the plywood.  Mold Remediation was necessary but the contractor was instructed to wrap the house correctly before any work began.

Water Damage from Your Washing Machine

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

Washing Machine Damage

Washing machines have been the cause of countless water losses and mold in homes.  SERVPRO responds to dozens of water and mold losses monthly.

On a recent call, SERVPRO responded to an owner whose washing machine leaked into the floor and to the room immediately below causing extensive damage to the floors, drywall, and insulation.  As a rule, every home owner should make a regular habit of checking the drain and hoses from their washing machine to ensure they are dry.

Hard water buildup on the hoses and fittings can also lead to water issues as it is a sign there is damage to the hardware.  In addition to the hoses, look for water on the floor surrounding your machine to ensure the machine it’s self is not leaking.

Idaho Falls - Asbestos Removal Requires a Cautious Approach

4/11/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Safely Abates Asbestos Contamination from Idaho Falls Structures

SERVPRO Has Qualified Technicians for Asbestos Abatement

Restoring your home after a disaster brings multiple issues. There are the physical matters such as weakened ceilings and sub-floors after a storm. The atmosphere after a fire is often toxic with odors. A common problem after many disasters is the presence of asbestos. While it is safe to use, and have in your home, once it is damaged, there is a risk to everyone who steps inside.

Asbestos removal from your Idaho Falls home is a breathing hazard and is not a clean-up issue that can be handled wearing rubber gloves and a surgical mask. SERVPRO knows which structure materials are a risk and should be either cleaned or removed depending on their condition.
Asbestos is a great material for decoration. It provides texture to paints which make for more attractive walls and ceilings. It also is mixed with plaster which makes for a stronger surface. It also is an excellent additive to acoustical sprays which help provide sound-proofing. It only becomes unsafe when it is cracked, burned, or otherwise damaged which releases asbestos into the air and the thread-like strands are a threat to anyone in the structure.

As an insulator, asbestos is used to reduce heat transfer in heating tanks and HVAC ducts. It is superb for wrapping pipes, blanketing large areas and even mixed with cement. Water does not cause harm in these uses, but fire and storm winds can tear or break it, releasing material into the air.
Our technicians first examine to see if removal is required. Paints that have a layer of smoke residue can be wiped down or cleaned and left in place. Asbestos blankets and wraps that are intact remain in situ. If we find building material that is damaged, then our response team dons masks with asbestos filters and perhaps even breathing gear if they determine the amount of released asbestos to be a significant enough problem.

Next, we physically remove every piece of damaged material that contains asbestos. We dispose of it per local and state regulations. If there is asbestos dust or other small pieces, we use vacuums with special HEPA filters to catch the circulating debris

Removing asbestos is time-consuming, but a necessary process. In many cases, SERVPRO of Idaho Falls performs this task in conjunction with other restoration procedures, but we check every possible threat and remove it if needed. If you suspect that you may have an asbestos issue, call us today at (208) 523-5365. We are here to help.

SERVPRO Mold Inspection Ammon Includes Remediation

Ammon Mold Remediation? Call SERVPRO

Count on the Pros to Secure Your Property Against Mold

Mold growth is a common problem. It can start from a simple leak of the outside gutters into your home and result in a growing colony between interior and exterior walls. It can cause certain health effects as well as cause extensive property damage if not discovered and dealt with promptly.

Most property owners don't realize they need a mold inspection or an assessment for their Ammon home until growth has already begun to spread. That's because the moisture that first allows mold spores to expand and grow is usually not noticed unless a family member steps in a puddle or notices a leak. The first sign of mold growth usually noticed is the musty odor it gives off as the patch proliferates and spreads. Not all mold species produce that musty odor, visual inspections often quickly discover a fungi issue. Regardless of how far the problem has grown, SERVPRO is ready to stop it.

Once called in, our inspectors use specialized moisture meters to examine air quality, identify the source of the mold and how far it has grown. This allows us to develop a remediation plan that will destroy the mold, remove most of the spores and reduce the moisture level to normal. Without this information, any effort to remove the mold is a half-effort at best, and the chances for new mold growth are fairly high.

With a plan in hand, our technicians will first remove any standing water that has been discovered. Then, they will isolate the infected areas. This prevents any further spread of mold and provides an area where technicians can remove work clothing and leave tools without worrying about accidentally contaminating other parts of the home.

Chemical cleaners and anti-fungal agents will be used to destroy growing mold spores and stop the spread. Once that is completed, industrial vacuums with HEPA filters are then used to remove spores from the infected areas. Our inspectors will then return to ensure the areas are as free of mold as is possible. Total mold eradication is not possible, in spite of what some companies may claim.

Before we depart, we will conduct a complete walk-through with you. This is to ensure your satisfaction before handing back the keys. As a local franchise with national support, SERVPRO of Idaho Falls is dedicated to helping our neighbors with an extensive inventory of equipment and training not available to all remediation companies. Call us at (208) 523-5365 to begin.

Signs That Your Home Needs Mold Testing

9/7/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Idaho Falls is here to break the mold and save your home.

Warning Signs That Mold May Be Inside Your Home

While some people know their home has mold simply because they can see it along the walls or behind sinks, others aren't so sure because there's no visible sight of an infestation. Whether you're suspicious of your home's condition, or you're buying a new home and want to cover all of your bases, mold testing may be a smart move.

Mold testing in Idaho Falls is necessary if you even suspect that your house has mold problems. Not only is it a potential threat to the health of your family members and pets, but mold can also destroy your home's structure and its contents. Here are some ways to know that your home should be mold tested.

1. You're suddenly experiencing congestion or allergy symptoms. Allergies often correlate with the season, but if you find that you or your family members get headaches, a scratchy throat, or runny nose inside of your home more than you do outside of it, mold may be the culprit.

2. You can smell a definite musty or moldy odor. These smells are indicative of mold presence, even if you don't see any mold around your home. If this is the case, it's best to call SERVPRO for mold testing.

3. The humidity inside of your home has increased in the past few weeks or months. Indoor humidity can increase for some reasons, and the combination of humidity and dark areas helps mold thrive. Excess moisture during the warmer months of the year is a particular concern and calls for professional mold testing.

4. You see something in a small spot that may be mold, but you're unsure. If you think you've caught sight of mold in your home, but you aren't 100 percent certain because of its location or the amount present, call the experts at SERVPRO to conduct a test.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

SERVPRO of Idaho Falls will complete your home's mold testing quickly and deliver accurate results so you can have peace of mind. To get a quote or for more information about our mold testing and remediation services, call us at (208) 523-5365.

Blackfoot Mold Remediation--Leave It to the Pros

4/4/2016 (Permalink)

Ceiling Mold in a Blackfoot Residence Should Receive Professional Remediation from SERVPRO

SERVPRO Remediates Mold Damage to Blackfoot Homes

Mold remediation in Blackfoot occurs quite often. The source of the molds, the spores themselves, can float into your home in the air, on pets' fur or hair and peoples' clothing. It can already be inside if there are moist places, hidden away in closets, utility or laundry rooms and even under the sinks in the kitchen or bathrooms. Air ducts are a favorite collection point of mold spores since being airborne organisms; they readily are circulated throughout your home. SERVPRO recommends keeping the RH-relative humidity of your home below 45%. This does inhibit the proliferation of mold colonies.

Mold can impact people with negative health effects. It can undermine building materials as it consumes the cellulose food source. The fuel for molds can be anything that is organic. Including wood, that wallboard, and furniture as well as clothing and fabric on the furniture. It needs moist spaces and relatively stale air. It thrives inside walls, especially when a leaking pipe creates the perfect conditions for moisture, warmth, and lack of sunlight.

Certain precautions must be exercised in mold remediation servicing. If you are not in a situation to handle this in a certified, safe way, and few homeowners are, calling a mold remediation and restoration company like SERVPRO is the best defense against a mold attack. Mold remediation is not a wise DIY project. Let the pros resolve the issues.

All A/C and heating systems will be turned off to stifle the circulation of mold spores. Skilled SERVPRO  technicians, following IICRC industry standards, will vacuum out the air ducts using an HEPA filtration system. Antifungal, antimicrobial, and disinfecting products will be introduced within the HVAC unit to destroy mold and mitigate the chance of reoccurrence. Bear in mind, it is unprofessional, and inaccurate, to claim total elimination of mold and mold spores from a household. Properly conducted mold remediation will return the interior environment of your home to a safe and sanitary condition.

Containment is critical to keeping the dislodged spores from floating into otherwise uncontaminated areas. The process of finding and removing molds may require the tearing out of building materials that have been contaminated. This means the demolition of walls, ceilings or floors if grossly affected. Specialty sponges are used by the SERVPRO experts to help wipe down and remove mold growth. It extreme cases, porous materials like drywall may require bagging and disposing of in certified centers for contaminated and biohazardous materials.

These fungi are not something to treat as an afterthought, so if you detect or suspect the presence of this mold growth in your Blackfoot home, call SERVPRO of Idaho Falls 24/7 at (208) 523-5365 for quick and safe mold remediation.
